At first, when bell hooks was describing the consciousness raising groups all I could think of was a bunch of women who were housewives gathering for their "book club" but instead of talking about books they talk about how their husbands never help and every other stereotypical complaint. And that may have been how it started. But today, with the free widespread opinions that are available online on social media and the internet, women are able to learn about feminism and then make a decision about how they feel about it.

Yep, I think CR groups were a little like book clubs. But the important distinction is that they were explicitly political. They were used to develop strategies as well as learn about topics and ideas.
