Our Porn, Ourselves

There is an inherent problem with women claiming porn for themselves as the porn industry is today. A problem that Sarah Estrella doesn't touch on in her article Our Porn, Ourselves. This problem is the same not only in the porn industry but in media in general, and that is that women don't control porn. They are not the ones making it, just like women are not the ones creating media content. The problem in these industries has nothing to do with who is consuming the content and everything to do with who is making it. Both porn and other entertainment mediums are created for and by men. How could you ever expect them to be free of sexism and objectification of the women that show up in the stories? Before women can be free to enjoy porn without objectifying them selves and people like them women must be included in the industry. There needs to be more women in positions of power over the content that is being created in our society. What women should be fighting for is not the right to view and enjoy porn it is the right for pron to be made with women as the intended audience.

  1. I think that this is being done, just not to the magnitude as it is for men as you said. She does touch on women in the field at one point where Oprah went over "woman-friendly" porn. I agree that women should be fighting for it to be made more for women as the intended audience however, women are still looked down upon if they engage in that activity so they still need to fight for acceptance of watching as well.

  2. I completely agree with you, porn is not controlled by women. Like you said, porn, for the majority, is viewed, created, and used for pleasure by men. Although the content of porn is filled up mostly by women (them being the ones in the porn) it doesn't deem them the ones in control. They aren't the ones behind the camera giving directions, or behind the screen of a computer clicking on these sites. However, I agree with Nicole's comment when she says that women should fight more for their intended audience even though they are not held to the same respect as men when dealing with watching porn.

  3. The fact that most porn is not controlled by women is a serious issue because porn in general is geared towards men (male sexuality is the norm). I encourage you to check out Tristan Taormino who is a feminist porn maker and sex positive activist.
